Solar One Solar One is a portable solar power demonstration system. The City of Santa Monica's Environmental Programs Division directed the construction and it is used as a portable solar lab in the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District. Community Environmental Institute teamed up with GO Solar Company to provide solar system design and installation of components. The goal of the project was to make a completely portable, self sustaining, interesting and interactive solar demonstration system.   Demonstration The Solar One project was first publicly demonstrated at Santa Monica Festival / Earth Day 2000 and recently at the grand opening of the new Burbank AMC entertainment complex on June 18th 2003. The interactive solar system was a big hit at these shows. With the sides hinged open, all components are at eye level, people can flip switches to operate lights, ventilation fan, pump, door bell, and even turn on an inverter to power a tape player. A digital monitor allows for viewing the Amps and Volts of solar electricity generated as well as the power consumed by the loads. This project helps participants learn about electricity as well as solar power and how the different components link together to form a system. Construction Safety was the highest priority in system design and fabrication, next was appearance and performance Solar electricity and heat needed to be generated and stored in a manner that is easily understandable, visual. and interactive. A solar electric (photovoltaic) panel, deep cycle battery, fuses, controller and digital monitor, generate, store and control the solar electricity. A custom sized swimming pool heating panel is used to heat the water contained in a 2.5 gallon tank. The all metal solar heating panel generates a great deal of interest, as well as heat. The panel quickly gets very hot in the sun, the pump's manual on/off switch and thermometers allow people see how fast the panel cools as the heat is transferred to the tank. The small circulation pump is powered with electricity generated by the solar electric system. The Solar One portable system allows for demonstrating and educating visitors about solar electricity as well as solar heating.
