Shell Solar earthsafe™ Sloped Roof Installation - May 2001

This small solar installation generates approximately 1kW of electricity every hour the panels receive direct sunlight.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power "solar buy-down program", helped pay for this installation.

This Shell earthsafe™ solar installation will generate reliable, clean power for decades.

Installation of Solar Panels

The first step is to unpack the solar panels and mounting hardware.

Next step is to secure solar panels onto aluminum rails. Shell earthsafe™ kits come complete with all mounting components.

The solar arrays consists of 16 solar panels in groups of 4, wired in series to produce 80 volts of DC power.

Installation of DC to AC Solar Inverter

This Shell earthsafe™ 10-12 system includes a 1 kw Advanced Energy Systems inverter.

The inverter was secured to an east facing wall that is not exposed to direct afternoon sunlight.

A surge arrestor was installed inside the homes main electrical panel. The arrestor is wired across both legs of the panel to provide safe and balanced surge protection.

The DC solar electricity comes down from the roof, into the inverter, where it is inverted into 120 volt AC power. The solar panels are wired to supply 80 volts of DC power to the inverter. This power is then efficiently changed into usable household 120 volt AC power. The 120 volt AC power is fed into the homes main electric panel.

A non-fused lockable AC disconnect switch is installed between the inverter and circuit breaker panel, to allow for a quick means of disconnection. The disconnect switch is labeled to notify electricians working in the future within the home, that solar electricity is connected.

Safety

Safety is the highest priority on our installations. GO Solar's experience allows for a safe working environment on every job.

The Shell earthsafe™ system is the only complete fully engineered residential grid tied solar system available, so to assure quality and safety, second to none.

The solar panels are solidly fastened to the roof and can withstand wind speeds well over 100 mph.

All necessary disconnects, fusing, grounding and lightning protection were installed to allow for a code compliant installation.

All installation manuals and component information are provided to the homeowner.
