Solar Electric Sizing Sheet

Solar Panel Sizing Information

Siemens Solar - SP150 - SP75 - ST20- SP36 - and - ST5 solar electric panels

The solar array is comprised of one or more solar PV modules (solar panels) which convert sunlight into clean solar electricity. PV is short for Photovoltaics, which means electricity from light. The solar modules need to be mounted facing the sun and avoiding shade for best results.

To Calculate Solar Panel Array Sizing

Fill in and print the solar panel sizing work sheet below to determine the number of panel needed in order to fully charge the batteries from the battery sizing work sheet. Begin by entering line 5 from your electrical load sizing work sheets.

Solar Panel (Module) Array Sizing Sheet

1. Total of Amp Hours per day
( line 5 of DC Load Sizing Sheet )

2. Multiply line 1 by 1.2 to account for battery loss
3. Average sun hours per day ( from solar insolation chart )
4. Divide line 2 by line 3 for total array Amps needed
5. Peak Amps produced by your solar module
You can determine peak amperage if you divide the module's wattage by the peak power point voltage, usually (17 to 17.5) ( see specs )
6. Divide line 4 by line 5 and round off to highest whole number. This equals the total number of modules needed if wired in parallel.
7. Determine the number of modules in each series string needed to supply necessary DC battery Voltage, from the charts below.
DC Battery Voltage  # of modules in each series string
12
24
48
1
2
4
Multiply line 6 by line 7.
This is the total number of solar modules needed.

Your next step is to calculate your solar charge control requirements.

Advance to Solar Charge Control sizing work sheet.
